AI BECOMING THE NEW REALITY. IS THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY SAFE?

Updated: Jul 20

Soon reality on the net especially social media will become nothing but an illusion. With the advancement of artificial intelligence capable of developing anything from generating almost real images and videos to mimicking a real person in writing, the authenticity of shared media information is at risk of being jeopardized by this latest trend. Unreal pictures of different public figures in different scenarios are already circulating social media platforms which if the audience isn’t aware believe them to be true. Fake images of Elon Musk kissing a robot went viral last year (2023) after he announced his plans of creating humanoid robots not robot wives.

Such media cause serious public confusion which may bring about miss understandings and judgements. This does not only mislead the public with false information but also exposes them to scams and hackers.

The Entertainment industry is not spared from the infiltrations of artificial intelligence. Infact AI has been in the industry for sometime. Software and applications like Fruity Loops, Cubase, Adobe After Effects and more have almost completely eliminated the use of traditional instruments to create pure unfiltered content. Yes AI has been recommended by a number of parties for the numerous advantages it has brought forth such as automating recordings,  analyzing of vast data faster, predicting trends and the ability to generate audience engaging content. However, AI exposes the entertainment industry to a number of vulnerabilities.

The main building blocks of the entertainment industry is art and what makes artistry unique is that each artist has his/her set of style. AI has simplified things to the extent that a thin line now exist between one’s set of uniqueness to another’s. Audio and video alone no longer serve as key identifiers of the original creator of the content. Audio is now auto tuned and videos overwhelmingly edited.  AI has made it easy for one to duplicate a content contradicting with the copyrights act.

When one is listening to some of the T-rap or Amapiano songs, some sense of similarities in the vocal effects and instrumental can be noticed. AI has not only worn out the line that exists between talents but also seeks to eliminate roles and jobs in the music industry. With the existence of software capable of self creating and editing sound, images, and videos just with the twitching of few knobs, typing in a few words and several clicks, what is then the purpose of video editors, movie directors, graphic designers, instrumentalists, sound engineers? Are song and book writers and editors safe from this threat?

The beauty of artificial intelligence is indeed divine with a lot of exciting features to explore day by day. However we must be aware at all times that as life is made simpler and better through AI the more artists loose sense of themselves selves and everything else that connects them to reality. It will not be long before we start listening to music completely developed by AI and watching movies and videos completely developed by AI, from script writing to video producing and editing.
